It’s been the toughest year ever for Chorlton’s shops, bars and businesses. As well as wider economic problems and rising costs, ten months of roadworks have also taken their toll. Every business in Chorlton district centre has been badly affected.
We’re proud of our independent spirit and the superb quality you’ll find in our town – please continue to support your local economy by shopping locally.

A wondrous place, serving the people of Chorlton for nearly 60 years. Barbakan’s award-winning breads, cakes and pastries are baked on-site through the night and presented fresh and hot every morning. The gorgeous baking smells wafting through North Chorlton are legendary.
Serving a huge variety of cheeses, olives, continental foods and charcuterie, Barbakan also make amazing sandwiches, snacks and soup – and fabulous coffee! Eat on the terrace, pack a picnic or take home some treats. Saturday is Sausage Pan Day ! Amazing German sausages with roast potatoes, fried onions and chorizo rice. Need we say more?

This is where Chorlton comes to have fun – whether it’s New Year’s Eve or World Book Day.
Fancy dress costumes for all ages to hire or buy, as well as a fantastic array of crazy accessories, from Halloween horrors to wacky wigs. Sharon and the team also sell balloons and decorations – including bespoke balloon arches and sculptures. You name it, they’ll build it out of balloons!
They also offer a Celebration decoration service, from one-of-a-kind table centrepieces to full room dressing. Hosting a party is stressful at the best of times. Let the experts take care of the sparkly bits for you: it really is more fun that way..

A family business, that’s traded in Chorlton for 40 years. Chorlton Bookshop has a calm and restful atmosphere and a team of extra-brilliant booksellers. They’ll offer help, friendly advice and recommendations – as well as tracking down that book you can’t quite remember the title of.
Alongside a huge range of fiction and non-fiction – including a colourful children’s section – they stock Jellycat toys, stamps, notebooks and book tokens. The Bookshop is especially famous for its ever-changing array of gorgeous greetings cards and gift wrap.
And if they don’t stock the book you’re after, there’s a free ordering service, usually with next-day delivery.
The Lead Station

This restaurant /cafe bar is the original and still one of the absolute best. The Lead Station has been an essential part of Beech Road’s food scene for nearly 30 years, serving tasty brunches, lunches and dinners to a loyal (and hungry) clientele. Occupying the former police station on Beech Road, it’s become a Chorlton institution of an entirely different kind!
People-watch from its front terrace, cosy up in the snug, relax in the bright, airy main room or eat al fresco in the back garden. The Lead Station does the day-to-evening thing so well – and with drinks from morning coffee to nightcaps, they’ve got it covered there too.
Lead Station is always busy – we think that their Superfood Salad and posh Fishfinger Sandwiches might have something to do with that…. There’s a cracking kids’ menu too.

Chorlton made, independent and utterly delicious! Lush brownies and cakes are baked with love by real people in an array of dreamy flavours – double choc, triple choc, sea salt caramelised white chocolate, Oreo, Biscoff (mmmmm Biscoff…), jaffa zing, hazelnut praline, caramel pecan espresso and loads more.
Find Nicki and the team at the monthly Makers Market in Chorlton (every third Saturday, Manchester Road), or pick up from their Chorlton kitchen (by arrangement ) on Albany Road.

Becky, Steph and their volunteer team, don’t believe that anyone should be without food or shelter. They look out for local people who find themselves homeless or in food poverty. Much more than just a charity shop – they run a foodbank, homeless support service and an extensive outreach programme, helping and referring rough sleepers and others.
The shop is packed with brilliant stuff – clothes, household items, books, DVDs and more. Bag yourself a bargain, or use your voucher to make a charity or foodbank donation.
Reach Out (Reg Charity 1176332) is part of the Street Support Network, the Coalition of Relief (COR), Manchester Homelessness Partnership and Real Change Manchester.

A Chorlton institution for nearly 30 years – we probably don’t need to say more, but we will!
